AFL Grand Final 2026: A Student’s Guide
History, Teams, Stats, and Where to Watch for Free
Discover Student Life at Genesis International CollegeMy first week in Australia, a classmate asked if I was going to “watch the footy” this weekend. I said yes without really knowing what I was agreeing to, and three hours later I understood why half the country stops what it’s doing every September. Australian Rules Football isn’t just a sport here, it’s a shared language, and the Grand Final is the one day almost everyone, from your barista to your trainer, is talking about the same thing.
If you’re new to Australia and still working out what all the fuss is about, this guide from Genesis International College covers the basics: where the competition came from, who’s playing this Saturday, how both teams got there, and how to watch the biggest game of the year without spending a dollar.
It’s also just a good excuse to sit with your housemates, learn a few new words to yell at the television, and feel a little more like a local.
How AFL Actually Works
If you’ve never seen a game, here’s enough to follow along on Saturday without asking your housemate to pause the TV every five minutes.
- ✓The ball is oval, the field is oval, and there are 18 players a side on the ground at once
- ✓A game is four quarters, usually around 25 to 30 minutes each once stoppage time is added
- ✓Kick the ball through the two tall middle posts and it’s a goal, worth 6 points
- ✓Kick it through either of the shorter outer posts and it’s a behind, worth 1 point, so scores end up looking like “12.11 (83)”: 12 goals, 11 behinds, 83 points total
- ✓There’s no offside, so play swings from end to end fast, and players can tackle anyone holding the ball
A Few Finals Words You’ll Keep Hearing
A few terms come up constantly this time of year. Knowing them makes the rest of this guide, and Saturday’s commentary, much easier to follow.
- ✓The ladder is simply the season standings, like a league table, ranking all 18 teams by wins
- ✓Finish first on the ladder after the regular season and you’re the minor premiers, the top seed heading into finals, though that’s not the same as winning the whole competition
- ✓The finals are a knockout stretch played after the ladder is locked in; the round right before the Grand Final is called the preliminary final
- ✓Win the Grand Final and you’ve won the premiership, which Australians almost always just call the flag
A Quick History of the AFL
The competition goes back further than most new arrivals expect. It didn’t start as a national league at all.
- ✓1896-97: eight Victorian clubs broke away to form the Victorian Football League, playing its first season in 1897
- ✓1980s-1990: clubs from South Australia and Western Australia joined, and the league was renamed the Australian Football League in 1990 to reflect its new national scope
- ✓1990s-2010s: further expansion added Adelaide, Fremantle, Port Adelaide, Gold Coast, and Greater Western Sydney
- ✓Today: 18 clubs across five mainland states, with Tasmania joining as the 19th in 2028
The season runs March to September, and it all builds to one afternoon at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the Grand Final.

Final Advice for New International Students
You don’t need to understand every rule to enjoy Grand Final day. Pick a team, even for the afternoon, and the game gets a lot more fun to watch. Most pubs and share houses will have something going on, so it’s worth asking around campus during the week, someone is almost always hosting a screening.
It’s a small thing, but showing up to class the following Monday with an opinion on the result is a fast way to find common ground with classmates and coworkers. Sport is one of the easiest bridges into Australian life, and Grand Final day is the biggest one all year.
